Help save government data at risk of being removed from the public web!

What: Data Rescue Houston aims to identify, download, and h elp pre serve federal data resources, ensuring long-term accessibility of data to the public.

Together we can protect public access to data critical for research and democracy. Likely tasks include:

  • Exploring websites to identify data sets
  • Developing and implementing scripts and tools to scrape data
  • Verifying data integrity
  • Uploading data
  • Documenting our work through video, social media and storytelling

Who: We welcome participants with a range of backgrounds, including programmers, librarians, scientists, students, storytellers, archivists, technologists, and other volunteers.

When: Saturday, March 4, 2017, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. (You don’t need to stay for the whole event.)

Where: Kyle Morrow Room, Fondren Library, Rice University

What to bring: Laptop, power cable and a reusable water bottle. We’ll provide food, coffee, and camaraderie.

Call for 2017 Scholarships for the Dan David Prize – Due March 10

The Dan David Prize awards scholarships to doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, carrying out research in one of the selected fields for the current year. Registered doctoral and post-doctoral researchers who study at recognized universities throughout the world, and whose research has been approved, are eligible to apply.

The Dan David Prize laureates annually donate twenty scholarships of US$15,000 each to outstanding doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers of exceptional promise in the chosen fields for the current year. Ten scholarships are awarded to students at universities throughout the world and ten scholarships to students at Tel Aviv University.

Applications are due MARCH 10, 2017

Invitation to the “Summer School on Intellectual Property” 2017 in Bonn, Germany

The University of Bonn would like to invite graduate and postgraduate students from your university to a Summer School on Intellectual Property in Bonn.

The Summer School addresses graduate and postgraduate students from any field of study. It will take place from July 31 to August 11, 2017. The program is conducted in English.

I ask your assistance in forwarding this message to graduate students in your department informing them of an outstanding fellowship opportunity with the Army Research Laboratory (ARL).

The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) invites exceptional young researchers to apply for the ARL Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship. This fellowship provides recipients the opportunity to pursue independent research while working alongside some of the nation’s best scientists and engineers. Applicants must display extraordinary ability in scientific research and show clear promise of becoming outstanding leaders. Successful candidates will have tackled a major scientific or engineering problem or will have provided a new approach or insight, as evidenced by a recognized impact in their field.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must have completed all the requirements for a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree in the physical sciences, life sciences, computational sciences, behavioral sciences, or engineering and must be within three years from the date of their degree at the time of application.
  • Selected fellows must pass a Department of Defense clearance process, requiring a background security investigation.
  • Applicants must demonstrate exceptional qualifications with respect to academic and scholarly achievement, as evidenced by research and publication.

Fellowship terms and benefits

  • A stipend of $100,000 annually
  • Health insurance (including dental and vision)
  • Paid relocation and a professional travel allowance
  • Appointments are for one year renewable for up to three years based on performance.
  • Fellowship appointments require a full-time commitment to the research program at ARL, and Fellows must be in residence at ARL during the entire period of the appointment.

Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholars Program – Applications due March 1st

The Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholars Program attracts high-achieving postdoctoral researchers from premier universities in the United States to do research at one of four Israeli universities. Once they complete their research, many Zuckerman postdocs are expected to accept faculty positions at top North American universities, weaving a network of academic collaboration and goodwill that will greatly benefit U.S.-Israeli scientific cooperation.

The Zuckerman Postdoctoral program strengthens the connection between the participants and the countries of the United States and Israel through unique experiences and new relationships formed during the program.

In addition, Zuckerman scholars enjoy programming and activities specially organized for them by the host universities, such as sightseeing tours, educational experiences, and social programs. These activities are aimed at strengthening the scholars’ knowledge of and affiliation with Israel, and at cultivating an esprit de corps within the program.

Duration and Funding:

  • Zuckerman Postdoctoral Scholarships are up to two years.
  • The amount of the stipend is $50,000 per year up to two years, with $36,000 each year devoted to living expenses and $14,000 each year for research ($10,000) and travel ($4000) expenses.
