James Smithson Fellowship Program

The Smithsonian Office of Fellowships and Internships (OFI) is currently accepting applications for the 2018 James Smithson Fellowship Program.

Named after our founder and funded through the generosity of past Smithsonian National Board Chair Paul Neely, this premier fellowship offers post-doctoral scholars in the fields of science, the humanities and the arts an opportunity to examine the interplay between research and public policy/discourse in our nation’s capital.

This program combines the best of the Smithsonian’s vast scholarship and collections with its unparalleled access to leading thought leaders and policy-makers. Fellowships last one year and include a stipend of $53,000.

The theme for the 2018 James Smithson Fellowship program is History, Memory, Authenticity

Applications Now Open: Innovation Crossroads

Applications are now open for ORNL’s prestigious Innovation Crossroads program (https://innovationcrossroads.ornl.gov/) We are looking for recent or soon-to-be PhD graduates who have started or are interested in starting new energy or advanced manufacturing companies. The benefits to those selected are significant: a 2-year stipend with health and travel benefits to work at ORNL, R&D funding to collaborate with ORNL scientists, and business model development and mentoring assistance… a total package of nearly $500,000. Applications are open for Cohort 2 until October 30th, 2017 at 5pm Eastern, and the successful candidates will begin their work at ORNL in May, 2018.

Call for Applications: AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships

Applications are now being accepted for the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships (STPF). This professional level fellowship is the premier opportunity for outstanding scientists and engineers to learn first-hand about policymaking, bring valuable expertise to policy, and enhance STEM in the federal government.

Gain hands-on policy experience, help develop and execute solutions to address societal challenges, and join a strong corps of over 3,100 policy-savvy alumni fellows working across sectors to serve the nation and citizens around the world. Fellow contributions may include policy research, drafting briefings and reports, and implementing policies to enhance reproducibility of research through rigor and transparency.

Fellows serve yearlong assignments in all three branches of the federal government in Washington D.C. and represent a broad range of backgrounds, disciplines and career stages. STPF is seeking candidates with strong STEM credentials, an interest in career transformation and a desire to enhance federal policy.

Application deadline for the 2018-19 fellowship year is November 1, 2017. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship and a doctoral level degree. Applicants with an M.S. in engineering and three years of professional experience also qualify.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral-level degree (PhD, MD, DVM, DSc, etc.) in any scientific, social science, or engineering discipline, OR a Master’s in engineering with three years of engineering related professional experience.
  • U.S. citizenship.

STIPEND & BENEFITS

  • $75,000–100,000.
  • Health insurance
  • Travel/training and relocation allowances.
