GradStarter is designed to help fund pilot projects that are innovative, promote academic achievement, and intellectually engage Rice graduate students and postdocs in your program and beyond.

GradStarter has funded several student-driven projects, such as the BRC Innovation Symposium, the Vagantes Conference, and the Ethnography Salon, to name a few. These projects creatively brought together students, postdocs, and scholars from diverse backgrounds to forge new connections while promoting academic and professional development.

Why should you submit a project?
GradStarter is a great opportunity for you to test your idea: gauge interest, obtain feedback, and connect with people and resources on campus to make your idea a reality.

Proposals are due November 15th.

Sallyportal Launches Tomorrow

Sallyportal is the new online professional development hub dedicated exclusively to the Rice community – connecting students, alumni, and parents in one virtual location. Launching October 12th, you can help us build the new Rice network at Sallyportal.org. With Sallyportal, you can find mentorship connections, search professional development events, find volunteer opportunities, stay engaged with campus groups and more! The idea for Sallyportal came from the Board of Trustees and the student-led Rice Education of the Future Initiative. It was championed by the Association of Rice Alumni Board and the Center for Career Development, partnering with organizations all over campus.

Postdoc mentoring of grad students – Opportunity at UTHealth

The Association of Minority Biomedical researchers is very excited to invite you to be part of their Mentorship Program!

What is this about? As a post-doc volunteer in our program you will have several opportunities:

– guide a graduate student for a year: the idea is for graduate students to have a post-doc with whom they can discuss all aspects of graduate school life. Mentor-mentee meetings would be informal and will be held in an as needed basis, we encourage meetings at least twice per semester.

– Serve as speaker in workshops: we provide career development workshops for graduate students and post-docs are the ones that run the dynamics and discuss the topics.

– Serve at mock candidacy exam committees: we arrange mock candidacy exams for 2nd year students where you get to evaluate their written proposal and oral presentation.

Our efforts are led by Andrew Bean, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Graduate Education, and Marenda Wilson-Pham, Ph.D., Program Manager. As an AMBR postdoctoral mentor, the GSBS Dean’s office will provide recommendation letters to active participants per request.

We are in need of as many post-doc volunteers as possible for this event.

This event will serve as a venue for students to meet and connect with you and will allow them to find their mentor for the year.

Little Free Library Build open to Rice employees age 30 and under

Rice employees 30 and under: help the United Way build little free libraries!

As a means of promoting a new young-person’s service group known as “LINC” (Lead, Impact, Network, Change), the United Way of Greater Houston is hosting a community-wide “Little Free Library Build.” Rice employees age 30 and under are invited to sign up to work in teams of 5 to build and paint little free libraries to be placed in neighborhoods where books are scarce in order to help improve academic success in those areas of our community.

United Way research suggests that, in middle-class Houston neighborhoods, there are an average of 13 age-appropriate books for every school-aged child; by contrast, in our community’s less affluent neighborhoods, that number is ONE book for every THREE HUNDRED children. The United Way’s Little Free Library initiative seeks to address that disparity, and you are invited to participate. Tools and materials are provided by the United Way, and no artistic or construction experience is required, only a desire to work with other young Rice employees who see a community need and want to do something about it.

When: Friday, October 14, 2016 from 4-8 p.m.
